Elon Musk, a vocal critic of OpenAI and its ChatGPT, is set to make his own AI chatbot, Grok, more accessible to the public. Musk's AI company, xAI, will open source Grok this week, a move that aligns with his vision of democratizing artificial intelligence.
"This week, @xAI will open source Grok," Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Open-sourcing a software like Grok means making its source code freely available for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. This approach offers several advantages, including increased flexibility for businesses to find solutions to problems without relying solely on internal teams.
Musk has repeatedly criticized OpenAI, accusing the company of abandoning its original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity. He believes that OpenAI has instead prioritized profit, leading to a less open and accessible approach to AI development.
When a user suggested that OpenAI should follow suit and open source its technology, Musk responded with a blunt, "OpenAI is a lie." This statement underscores his belief that OpenAI's actions do not align with its stated principles of openness.
Musk has long been a proponent of open-source AI. During a podcast appearance last November, he expressed his general bias towards open sourcing, stating, "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing."
His decision to open source Grok comes after xAI released the chatbot, which reportedly took only four months to develop. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, playfully mocked this achievement by sharing a post demonstrating how he built a similar chatbot using GPT Builder with a single prompt.
Altman quipped, "GPTs can save a lot of effort."
Musk responded to Altman's jab with a sarcastic comment, saying "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine." This exchange highlights the ongoing rivalry between Musk and OpenAI, fueled by differing visions for the future of AI.
