Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of making history, needing just 97 more runs to become the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander could surpass Sunil Gavaskar's 49-year-old record when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, starting on July 2.
Jaiswal's consistency has been a major positive for India during a challenging transition period in the longest format of the game. He recently demonstrated his ability with a superb century in the first Test at Headingley. However, his effort wasn't enough to prevent India from losing by five wickets. Despite setting England a formidable target of 371 runs, India was defeated by the strong batting performance of Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Jaiswal's individual form remains a significant source of hope for India as they seek to recover at Edgbaston. In his 20 Tests, he has accumulated 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who reached the milestone in his 23rd Test in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag follow on the list, having surpassed 2,000 runs in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant stroke play and remarkable temperament, Jaiswal now has the opportunity to join and even surpass these greats. This achievement would provide India with a much-needed boost in a crucial must-win Test match.
