KL Rahul Prioritizes National Duty Ahead of Paternity Leave for England Tests

In a remarkable display of dedication, KL Rahul has chosen to prioritize his national duty for the upcoming England Test series, even in the face of newfound fatherhood. Just weeks after welcoming his first child, Rahul has rejoined the team, setting aside personal joys to focus on the challenges ahead.

According to Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani, Rahul's first words upon returning to training for IPL 2025 were: "Country first, Hemang bhai. I care for this team." This statement underscores his commitment to the Indian squad and his eagerness to contribute to their success. The England Test series is a clear target for KL Rahul.

With veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma no longer participating in Tests, the team is relying on Rahul to bring his experience and guide the younger players.

Badani highlighted Rahul's proactive approach, noting, "I really liked the fact that he was someone who said, ‘I want to go to England early. I want to play the side game.’" He further emphasized the significance of Rahul's decision, adding, "Let’s not forget, he’s a young father, and I don’t think his child is travelling with him initially. So for him to say, ‘Country over my child’ — that’s a huge call."

Rahul's commitment was evident in his early arrival in England, where he participated in the unofficial Test against England Lions. His performance in that match, including scores of 116 and 51, sent a strong message about his readiness for the series.

Following a period of shifting roles, Rahul has been given the opportunity to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. In the first innings, he provided a solid start with 42 runs. He then solidified his position in the second innings, crafting a well-constructed 137 off 247 balls, helping India reach a total of 364.

This century held special significance for Rahul, marking his return to form after a gap of 23 Tests since his previous century against South Africa in 2023.

Having previously toured England for Tests in 2018 and 2021, Rahul's experience will be invaluable. This time, he embraces the role of a senior player, mentor, and influential voice within the team's dressing room.

He has been observed guiding younger batsmen like Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sai Sudharsan, as well as his childhood friend Karun Nair, who has rejoined the Test side after eight years.

Badani reiterated Rahul's dedication, stating, "KL made a statement I remember ahead of the Test series: ‘I care for this team, and I want to be here.’" He added, "In the absence of Rohit and Virat, he becomes the senior-most batter — and he has played that role really well."

"He’s played in England before. And in terms of maturity and technique, you can clearly see he’s more focused now. He knows he has to fill the vacuum left behind," Badani noted. He also highlighted Rahul's responsibility in guiding the younger players, most of whom are under 30 and new to this level.
