The Dindigul Dragons, led by captain R Ashwin, have been absolved of ball-tampering accusations in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). The charges were initially leveled by Siechem Madurai Panthers following the Dragons' dominant nine-wicket victory on Saturday, June 14. The Panthers alleged that the Dragons used chemically treated towels to illegally alter the condition of the match ball.
The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) conducted a thorough review and announced that it found no concrete evidence to support the claim of ball-tampering during the game.
"The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams," stated TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan. He further added, "The Playing Control Team, which included the umpires and the match referee, maintained complete supervision of the ball throughout the entirety of the match. No concerns were voiced during the play, and no verifiable proof has been presented. The allegations appear to be speculative and made after the fact."
Despite the TNCA's findings, the Madurai-based franchise retains the option to pursue an independent investigation into the matter. However, they must formally request such an inquiry by 3 PM on Tuesday, June 17.
The TNPL has issued a warning to the Madurai Panthers regarding the potential ramifications of making unfounded accusations. "TNCA cautions that baseless or defamatory allegations may lead to disciplinary action under the TNCA Code of Conduct and Operational Rules."
In the match that sparked the controversy, the Dragons successfully chased down a target of 151 in under 13 overs after restricting the Panthers to 150/8. Ashwin, who bowled economically, taking 0 wickets for 27 runs in his 4 overs. Shivam Singh's explosive 86* off 41 balls, along with Ashwin's rapid 49 off 29, propelled the Dindigul Dragons to a comfortable victory. Their 124-run opening partnership effectively sealed the win.
